On this day, Second Lieutenant Wilfred Owen, a poet who undertook the task of speaking for the soldiers at the front lines, leaves England for the Western Front. His poem Anthem for Doomed Youth was written when he was convalescing in a hospital in Edinburgh begins with the line “What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?” Owen was killed one week before the war officially ended.
